The Inspiration Behind the Evening of the Defender

The Evening of the Defender was created to honor the enduring spirit of advocacy that drives our profession forward. This event recognizes the collective contributions of those who champion public policy and protect the future of financial services.

The inspiration for this evening stems from leaders like Terry Headley, whose lifelong commitment to advocacy left an indelible mark on NAIFA here in Nebraska and nationally, as well as the industry at large.

About Terry Headley

Terry Headley was a titan in the insurance and financial services industry, known for his relentless dedication to advocacy and his deep-rooted loyalty to NAIFA, where he was a member for 50 years. Founder and President of Headley Financial Group in LaVista, Nebraska, Terry entered the life insurance business at just 19 after a brief professional baseball career. He went on to earn over four decades of consecutive Club Qualifications and became the youngest agent inducted into the Principal Financial Group’s Hall of Fame.

Terry served in nearly every volunteer leadership role at both the state and national level, culminating in his term as NAIFA National President in 2010-2011. He was inducted into the NAIFA-Omaha Hall of Fame, received the NAIFA-Nebraska Distinguished Service Award, and in 2020 was honored with the John Newton Russell Memorial Award, the highest distinction in the industry.

A powerful voice for the profession, Terry frequently testified before Congress, state legislatures, and major regulatory bodies, including the SEC, DOL, FINRA, and NAIC. His advocacy helped overturn the DOL’s fiduciary rule, protecting thousands of advisors and their clients.

Terry’s lifelong commitment to NAIFA’s political action committee earned him the title of IFAPAC Co-Commander-in-Chief.  Terry’s impact continues to be felt. His passion for NAIFA and IFAPAC lives on through the countless agents and advisors he inspired to raise their voice for the profession.
